Johnny Komar, Cinematographer, Animator and Artist

Cars (and a motorcycle) currently owned by Johnny: 89’ Volkswagen Polo CL, 89’ Ford Bronco II XLT, 91’ Honda Acty and an 84’ Yamaha XS650 custom

Johnny brought his Honda Acty to our Cars and Coffee event in Industry City, and we loved the car so much that we had to ask Johnny about it.

WONYC: Hey Johnny. What are some of the details – modifications/changes/etc. you put on the Acty?

The Acty has a roof rack with KC Lights, yellow tinted headlights, (and a) 2” lift with GT Gunmetal 13” golf cart tires. (It also has) brand new upgraded front springs, rear shocks, control arms, and bushings. There’s a custom exhaust, partial bed liner topped with astroturf, and jump seat bench. I painted the tie downs bright orange for fun. Lastly, there’s a custom Japanese vanity plate that reads ‘BABY’, which has become the focal point of the whole truck. It’s still an ongoing project with more upgrades and mods to come.

Can you describe the feeling you have when you sit in the car?

Having never been to Japan, I get an odd sense of nostalgia and familiarity from a time beyond my own. It’s so well designed, and (it) genuinely makes me happy every time I drive it. Anemoia is real!

What do you like about owning an analog car?

I think it helps me be present in the moment. It requires extra levels of focus and attention versus the modern luxury vehicles.

How is this car an extension of your personality?

I’d say it’s pretty wacky like me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
